13th annual Heinz Award bestowed on Hugh Herr

Hugh Herr, PhD, of the Media Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Providence-based Center for Restorative and Regenerative Medicine, a collaborative research initiative among VA, Brown University and MIT, received the 13th annual Heinz Award for Technology, the Economy and Employment. Herr, a double amputee and widely known bioengineer who has led efforts to develop new prosthetic devices that merge body and machine, was one of six distinguished Americans to receive a $250,000 award from the Heinz Family Foundation. “Everything about Dr. Herr is an expression of the triumph of the human spirit over adversity,” said foundation chair Teresa Heinz.
