Over the past year, the Journal of Rehabilitation Research and Development (JRRD) Editorial Office has fielded several questions about reviewer compensation. As a result, the JRRD team designed a 21-item online survey that addressed rehabilitation research journal publication practices and current and future reviewer compensation practices. From a culled list of rehabilitation research journals, we queried 111 individuals and received and tabulated 34 responses. The 3-minute survey included questions on general journal demographics, the peer review process, and compensation, and included an optional section on online publication of reviews.
The majority of the respondents were journal editors (88.2%) and primarily represented private sector publications (58.8%), societies (26.5%), and professional organizations (14.7%) from more than 16 major rehabilitation areas, including aging, assistive technology, prosthetics, psychiatry, and rehabilitation. The majority of the journals had been in publication for several decades and were fairly split among monthly, bimonthly, and quarterly publication timelines. On average, 64.7 percent of the journals used two reviewers for each article, and the total number of reviewers each year varied from 23 to more than 1,000. When queried about reviewer compensation practices, 55.9 percent of respondents reported that no compensation was given, while the remaining 44.1 percent responded affirmatively that some compensation was provided. All who responded affirmatively indicated that compensation was provided through an annual listing in the publication and was not tied to performance requirements. Furthermore, journals that were not currently compensating reviewers had no plans to initiate compensation.
Based on our survey results, the JRRD team decided that a public thank you to the 346 reviewers from 2005 was essential and that future acknowledgments would appear in the last issue of each year. We deeply appreciate all who volunteered their time and expertise in the review of JRRD submissions. We hope that the relationships we have cultivated will continue and expand, and we welcome your input. Thank you.
