ON THE COVER

Second generation implanted neuroprosthesis (NP-II) to provide hand and arm function for individuals with C6 and C7 level spinal cord injury. The implanted components include the joint transducer placed in the wrist, ten epimysial or intramuscular electrodes and an implant stimulator-telemeter device. The individual controls hand opening and closing by flexion and extension of the wrist. Stimulation can be provided to the triceps for elbow extension and to the pronator quadratus for forearm pronation. The only external component worn by the user is the transmit/receive coil. This research is conducted by the Cleveland FES Center, a consortium including the Louis Stokes DVA Medical Center, Case Western Reserve University, and MetroHealth Medical Center with support from the Department of Veterans Affairs Rehabilitation Research and Development Service and the National Institutes of Health. Principal Investigator: P. Hunter Peckham, PhD.
